What is halitosis?

What is halitosis?

Many people struggle with halitosis, but our dentists at Reflections Dental Health Centre in Winnipeg can help.

Oral malodour, halitosis, or 'bad breath' is an oral health issue that causes unpleasant or foul-smelling breath. There are many potential reasons for lingering halitosis, including eating particular foods such as garlic and onions, insufficient oral care, dry mouth, or smoking tobacco products.

Halitosis can also be a symptom of other underlying health issues such as diabetes or a gastrointestinal disorder, which is why the first step to treating chronic or lingering halitosis is diagnosing the source of the problem.

If concerned about oral malodour, visiting a dentist for an exam can help to identify any issues that can be treated right away, and assess those which need further intervention.

Some Ways to Tackle Bad Breath

For many cases of bad breath, there are some steps that can be taken to address the problem, such as:

  • Brushing and flossing two times a day - minimum. Don’t forget your cheeks, tongue, and the roof of your mouth.
  • Remove and thoroughly clean dentures at night before replacing them.
  • Consider quitting smoking.
  • Visit your dentist for regular check-ups.

How We Can Help

While most people experience bad breath occasionally, chronic or serious halitosis can have a negative impact on one’s health and self-confidence. For targeted help with halitosis, consulting with a dental professional with experience treating this issue can be a good way to develop a treatment and prevention plan.
