Your Child’s First Dental Appointment

Posted May 31st, 2016

At Reflections Dental Health Centre in Winnipeg, we recommend that you bring your child to the dentist shortly after their first tooth erupts.

By: Dr. Ken Hamin, General Dentist, Reflections Dental Health Centre

Your child’s first dental visit is an exciting time in their development. Many parents wait until their child is 3 years old to visit the dentist for the first time. While there is nothing wrong with waiting until your child is emotionally and developmentally ready for their first dental experience, one of the drawbacks however is that by 3 years of age, your child could already have cavities or signs of dental carries.

Why Earlier is Better:

We want to help all parents understand exactly what they can do to prevent their child from getting cavities. Your child’s first dental appointment is an opportunity for us to have a discussion about how to keep your child’s teeth and gums healthy.

This includes:

  • Proper brushing techniques
  • How to clean the gums and mouth after feedings
  • Tips and tricks to make oral hygiene fun!

Bring your Toddler to your Next Dental Appointment

If you are the parent of a young child, bring them to your next hygiene appointment. We can get your teeth cleaned and also spend some time introducing your toddler to our office.

When your child is 3, or you feel they are ready for a full dental examination, we would be happy to see them again. At Reflections Dental, we are a firm believers that positive dental experiences begin in childhood.
